Description
This consignment very early 1935 Gibson Roy Smeck Stage De Luxe (Batch Number 64A 16) well represents one of my favorite batches of the early examples of this model from its first 12 months of production. Specifications from these early production guitars include the smaller 3 3/4″ soundhole diameter and significantly lighter, which promotes a stronger bass response, and the significantly lighter top bracing, which yields a quicker response and stronger bass and lower midrange. This particular guitar has a very robust presence with a moderate or light right hand attack. Mahogany back, sides, and neck, Adirondack spruce top with iconic firestripe pickguard, Replacement vintage style Waverly with ivoroid buttons, Silkscreened headstock from with “Gibson” script logo and block letter “Roy Smeck Stage De Luxe” model, Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and replacement bridge, Single layer cream body binding on top and back, Replacement ivoroid bridge pins, Original cream colored endpin. As part of the conversion process, the binding material in the fret slots were replaced with actual frets, the neck was narrowed to a 1 3/4″ nut width, and the remodeled rear neck profile was refinished along with a light overspray everywhere else to give a uniform surface. The voice is large and projective with light gauge strings, especially so with a bluegrass gauge (.056″ – .012″) stringing. Included is a newish Cedar Creek hardshell case with classic red interior.
