I've been looking critically at basses coming from China for over 20 years. What I have most often seen has been instruments with odd designs, poor workmanship, and unstable green wood. Working with bassist Paul Strelau to develope a complete line of basses, Sam Shen is dedicated to making fine student and professional grade instruments. I've been very impressed with the solidly conceived designs, the clean and accurate workmanship, and the fully seasoned woods used in Shen basses.

This is the best sounding Shen hybrid that I have
had in the shop. Medium grain width 4-piece Spruce top, Laminated back
and sides with nice flame Maple as the outer ply, Nicely flame figured

and tailpiece saddle, Ebonized tailpiece, Bridge adjusters added as part
of Matt Bohn's complete setup. Dimensions: Same as for all SB 80, 90,
100, 150 models. This bass sounds great with D'Addario Helicore hybrid
strings. The looser response of this particular top put it head and shoulders
above any other hybrid Shen bass that I've had in the shop. A cosmetic
second for some spots on the back wheere the stain didn't penetrate as

basses at the NAMM show pick up a top crack from the dry Santa Ana
winds that blow through the open rollup doors on setup day. This one
is about 5" long on the bass side of the tailpiece. Jeff Sahs
performed the crack repair as part of his post-NAMM setup. I've given
a $500.00 discount for it! The voice of this large bass is very strong
and full as these SB 200 7/8 basses usually are. I have it strung with

The deep ribs, large 3/4 pattern, and willow sides and carved back
give this bass a great deal of power and rich, dark presence. This
instrument is a real standout in an orchestra section and I personally

This flatback 7/8 model was my #2 seller for Shen in 2007. Medium
grain Spruce top, Willow back and sides, Maple neck, Brass French style
single unit machines, Ebony fingerboard, Rosewood tailpiece, oil varnish,
Bridge adjusters with walnut wheels. Dimensions are: Top length 45
5/8", Upper bout width 21 1/8", Middle bout 15", Lower
bout 26 3/8", Depth at tail 9 1/4", depth at upper bout bend
8 1/2", Depth at neck 7 1/4", String length 42". The
preliminary setup was performed by the Shen shop in Rochester for the
2008 NAMM show. I had Jeff Sahs work his magic and fine tune the setup
once I got it back from Anaheim. This bass has a big, lush voice. It
came strung with Spirocore orchestra guage and has a huge sound strung
that way. I have switched the strings to Spirocore weich for my jazz
playing customers, who often prefer the singing trebles and snappier
