Steve Swan Guitars Swan

 Merrill Guitar Company

I was the first dealer for Jim Merrill vintage style guitars, starting in late 2000. Well known for crafting instruments that are very close in function and style to the classic OMs and dreadnoughts made by Martin in the 1930s, Jim has refined his building techniques since then and his guitars enjoy a very high demand. Other models include Gibson style slope shoulder jumbos and smaller Martin sizes. I will be featuring nice clean used examples of his work and occasionally will get in a new guitar that is the result of an order cancellation by a retail customer or store.

Coming Soon: 2006 C-28

2001
C-18 (00044)
This is one of the few C-18s that I had made using the now unobtainable heavily quilt figured Honduras Mahogany that I had purchased in the mid-1990s. My own supplied stiff Artist Grade Adirondack Spruce top, My own supplied Quilted Honduras Mahogany back and sides, Waverly tuners, My own supplied Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay with gold script "Merrill" logo, 1 3/4" nut width, Ebony fingerboard with pale abalone dots, Slimmer neck profile than the original Martins from the 1934-38 era, Tortoise body binding and butt wedge, Standard 18 style top purflings, 1934-1938 era advanced X-brace position, Ebony bridge with long saddle and 2 5/16" string spread, Ebony endpin and bridge pins, Replacement "Tortise" vintage shape pickguard, Ebony heelcap, Black line backstrip, Added Ebony strap button at heel. The guitar is very clean with no dents or dings. There is on 2 1/2' repaired side crack just below the bass-side waist. The voice is quite loud, full of harmonically dense tone color, and very even from string to string. The lacquer finish is quite light, which helps to keep the voice very transparent. A great sounding example. With TKL case.

2004
C-28 (000171)
This model represents Jim Merrill's very accurate recreation of the classic advanced X-brace wide neck D-28s of the 1936-37 era. Honduran Rosewood back (dense, dark slab cut) and sides (redder and nearly 100% vertical grain), Tight and even grain Adirondack Spruce top, Gotoh G-98 style tuners, Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay with pearl script "Merrill" logo, 1 3/4" nut width, Ebony fingerboard with abalone diamonds and squares inlay, Slightly slimmer neck profile than the original Martin models, Ivoroid binding, butt wedge, and heelcap, Narrow herringbone top purfling, Standard 28 style rosette purfling, Ebony bridge with long saddle and 2 5/16" string spread, Red turtle-oid vintage style pickguard, Zipper backstrip, White endpin and bridge pins white red dot. The guitar is in nearly new condition except for two small dings behind the bridge. No strap button attached to the heel yet. The voice is characteristically very large and full with good definition in the basses, making an excellent rhythm guitar when strung with mediunm guage strings or a fine fingerstyle dreadnought when strung with light guage. With Cedar Creek-made Merrill hardshell case.

2002 Merill OM-28 (00067)
I was the first dealer for Jim Merrill's guitars. One of the finest designs in the traditonal style, Merrill's OMs enjoy great popularity. I originally sold this example in early 2003. Brown 100% vertical grain Brazilian Rosewood back, sides and headstock overlay chosen from my own stock of wood, Artist Grade Adirondack Spruce top chosen from my wood supply, Waverly tuners, "Merrill" gold decal on headstock face, Vintage 28 style neck, Unbound Ebony fingerbaord with short pattern abalone diamonds and squares inlay, Ivoroid binding, heelcap, and side dots, Small vintage style herringbone top purfling, Vintage style 28 rosette, Ebony bridge with 2 5/16" string spread, Through type ivory saddle compensated by me, Ivoroid Stew-Mac unslotted bridge pins, Large patttern vintage style pickguard, Vintage size zipper backstrip, Strap button added to treble side of neck heel, Output jack endpin hole plugged with Taylor black endpin. This guitar was used on stage for fingerstyle and flatpick blues for 5 years. I had Alan Perlman replace the first 3 badly worn frets, perform an overall fret level, and buff out the numerous dings and pick sweep marks on both sides of the strings. Alan did a great job and the guitar is now very presentable. I've priced it $500.00 lower than usual due to the play wear. It comes with the original Merrill Cedar Creek vintage style hardshell case. A gigantic-sounding guitar that has definitely been played in, developing lots of tonal character and depth along the way.
